Yama Yoga was created as a means to awaken and enlighten our true essence through the practice of yoga. Along this yogic path of growth and awakening, Yama Yoga serves to guide and hold space for anyone and everyone so that each student can live boldly, fully, and with love for Self and all beings. Such is the motivation for Yama Yoga to facilitate a journey so that we may all benefit.
According to ancient yogic writings, Yama is universal morality and describes moral virtues that should be followed. They are the "ethical rules" one aims to follow in yoga. The Yamas address an individual's interaction with others and describes mindful behavior in dealing with the world. The Yamas comprise of five code of ethics, essentially "The Golden Rule".
Ahimsa - non-violence
Satya - truthfullness
Asteya - non-stealing
Brahmacharya - not giving into desire
Aparigraha - non-possesiveness
As I researched and pondered the meaning and philosophy of Yama Yoga, the Yamas really resonated with me. If we can strive to live fully by these principles, then we stand on a solid foundation on our yogic journey.
